Lesson from a symbol

From the May 1982 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Good symbols have their place. They are an aid
to grasping God's ideas. Comforting?
Yes, true, but temporary candles fade
before the sun and aren't worth coveting.

Those chalked-in numbers on a blackboard sing
of more than chalk and slate, and so I find
the Principle beyond this "everything."
What is beyond the symbol, if not Mind?

O numbers, birds, and buds, I love you all!
I love the way you speak to me of Love:
but I must not mistake (why let you fall?)
the symbols for reality thereof.

And so one learns from sense intuitive
what symbol—when lost sight of—has to give.
