"My heart is singing: I have found the way." These words from Hymn No. 64 of the Christian Science Hymnal expressed my feelings over seventeen years ago when I became a student of Christian Science. Since that time, I've known an ever-increasing joy in feeling God's presence in my life. How thankful I am that prayer, as taught in Christian Science, reveals God to be the one true guiding force and support. I have had many healings, including those of a fractured toe, severe back pains, flu, colds, and gum disease.
One time, what appeared to be a burst blood vessel in my eye spread and almost encompassed the pupil. When I mentioned to the Christian Science practitioner who was praying for me that I became more fearful each time I looked at my eye, he pointed out that I needed to stop looking at the mortal condition. He said, "Stop trying to change human conditions. Keep busy proving spiritual facts." One of the spiritual facts I worked with is that man is God's perfect idea and as such cannot be tainted or spotted. God is free from imperfection, and thus, so is His image and likeness, man. The discoloration disappeared quickly, and the eye returned to normal in a few days.
I am most grateful for a healing of deep sadness after I learned that a dear friend and his two children had been killed in an auto accident. When I heard the news, shock and sorrow overwhelmed me and I became very emotional. I prayed to recognize God's presence, omnipotence, and love. But then I spent many hours thinking, "I just can't believe they're gone. I just can't believe they're not with us." Suddenly I realized, "That's absolutely right—I just can't believe in the dream called death, for it is not a reality."
