To will and to do

From the June 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For it is God which worketh in you
both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

(Philippians 2:13)

Morning . . .
Give me the grace
to know what I should do,
not simply what I might.
Give me the wit and humbleness
to prove that what I do
reveals a larger clarity—
your presence with me.

What act, more than selfless charity,
reflects Your magnanimity?

Mere contemplation or
passive acceptance of Your gift
leaves aspiration unfulfilled,
does not change what I should
to what I can.
My effort is demanded; still,
each eager step along Love's path
must lean upon the Lord's right arm.
Listening meekly for Your will
(transcending human best intent)
I find the strength to do in You:
Your presence working with me,
joyfully . . .
tirelessly . . .
outcome inevitable.
