Church proclaims Christ's Science to the world

From the August 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The voice of Christ, Truth, speaks through the Church the message of Christian Science. Through the healing and teaching activities of the Church of Christ, Scientist, we can perceive that Christian Science is the demonstrable law of God that Christ Jesus practiced. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy defines "Church" as "the structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle." Then, translating ultimate truth into human practicality, she adds, "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick." Science and Health, p. 583.

Mrs. Eddy founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, to express in some degree the spiritual ideal; it is designed to be the institution defined above. The pure impartiality of this design tells humanity of God's ineffable love for spiritual man, made in His likeness. Bearing witness to the power and authority of Truth, our Church heals, redeems, and regenerates mortals, awakening us to realize the spiritual perfection of the family of man.

The Church of Christ, Scientist, proclaims both law and gospel. Its teachings uphold healing by means of divine Love's infinite power expressed in Christ—that is, spiritual healing without material aid, meeting all human needs and bringing to light the inviolable innocency and the deathless immortality of Godlike man. The Church's gospel is equity and mercy based on divine justice—the brotherhood of man expressed in equal availability of spiritual rewards for all members. Mrs. Eddy explains, "The church is the mouthpiece of Christian Science,— its law and gospel are according to Christ Jesus; its rules are health, holiness, and immortality,—equal rights and privileges, equality of the sexes, rotation in office." The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 247.
