After attending my first Christian Science lecture, I was so inspired that the next day I obtained a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I read it through in one week. Then I read it through again. During this early period of study I was freed of the need for a medical corset, which I had worn for some years. (The prognosis had been life in a wheelchair.) I was also healed of chain-smoking, social drinking, bronchitis, and sinus trouble of many years' duration. All were healed while I read and pondered the towering spiritual truths in Science and Health. I spoke to no one about these problems; I just read, and was healed.
A happy year followed during which I joined a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and The Mother Church. I was then involved in radio broadcasting, working as an announcer, singer, pianist, and writer. One morning my employer took me by surprise. He said he was "going to take advantage of a thirty-day clause in our contract," indicating that he thought I "would be happier elsewhere." Leaving that job was a challenge, all right, but I knew that no one could take my joy from me. In fact, the situation had all the earmarks of an opportunity to prove the good will and allness of God.
Although I had ten years of pioneer experience to offer, there didn't seem to be any takers. Whether by mail or through auditions the prospects always seemed to promise success. But then my leads would inexplicably turn cold. Yet there were no obvious reasons for the swift changes in the potential employers' attitudes. Now and then there was some free-lance work, however. Once I did narration on a film and was paid enough after one afternoon's work to carry me for three months.
