Lectures—lighting the way to Truth

From the August 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus, our Way-shower, said, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." Matt. 5:16. Isn't this the inspiration for giving a Christian Science lecture today—to bring the light of Truth to humanity?

When branch church memberships prepare to sponsor a lecture, they strive to come alive to its Christly message and healing purpose. They also recognize the obligation to let their light shine in the community. This obligation is successfully fulfilled to the degree each member demonstrates Christian Science in his or her own life. As Mrs. Eddy says: "He who first brings to humanity some great good, must have gained its height beforehand, to be able to lift others toward it. I first proved to myself, not by 'words,'— these afford no proof,—but by demonstration of Christian Science, that its Principle is divine. All must go and do likewise." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 338.

The writer desired further spiritual growth along this line. As a member of a branch church lecture committee, I prayed to make a more substantial contribution to lecture preparatory work. The clear light of Truth gave me a fresh view, and I discovered a stumbling block in my metaphysical approach to lecture preparation. I realized that although I was spiritually rewarded in hearing most lectures, there were others I felt I wouldn't like and was less likely to support or attend.
