Sunday School teaching and the simplicity of Christ

From the September 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

While today most secular and much religious instruction relies on material aids and psychological techniques to attract and engage thought, effective instruction in matters of Spirit and its practical Science or laws;—Christian Science—rests first of all in the uncluttered simplicity and purity of spiritual understanding. Paul illustrates this ideal when he says, "We speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual." I Cor. 2:13.

Each individual finds his own way to express this ideal. Prayerfully considering the examples of Christ Jesus giving his marvelous lessons on a hillside or from a boat and Mary Baker Eddy in small New England living rooms pouring out from her heart the new-old understanding of one God, good, and man perfect in His image, will bring inspiring reminders that real communication and confidence are spiritual. Their basis is not in material things or human modes, but in the divine Mind of Christ.

Mrs. Eddy, who established Christian Science Sunday School teaching as part of her Church in the Manual of The Mother Church, writes in Science and Health, "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness." Science and Health, p. 332.
