I had never heard of Christian Science...

From the January 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I had never heard of Christian Science before meeting my husband-to-be. I had been raised in another religion, so Christian Science was like another language to me. For several years after my husband and I were married, I was very opposed to what I thought it was.

I then reached a point where I could see no reason for being. (I had stopped attending my former church.) One day the thought was strong to find my husband's "books" and read them. (He had a small set of books: a Bible and a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy that his mother had given him while he was in the Navy.) So I did. And I read them each day thereafter. But, because I had been so opposed to Christian Science, to avoid embarrassing myself, I would hide the books before my husband came home from work each day. Nevertheless, the ground of my thought was being made ready for Christian Science. As Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 361): "A germ of infinite Truth, though least in the kingdom of heaven, is the higher hope on earth, but it will be rejected and reviled until God prepares the soil for the seed."

Then one Sunday morning I said, "Let's go to church." My husband said, "Where?" I replied, "To your church." That was the start of my "open" study of Science. My mother-in-law was a Christian Science practitioner. With her help and my husband and three sisters-in-law supporting my baby steps, I made wonderful progress.
