Christian Science unfolds divine energies

From the January 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The practice of Christian Science pours divine energies into human consciousness, and these energies cleanse, invigorate, and heal, putting individuals progressively under the control of God, divine Mind. God's qualities—love, wisdom, health, for example—are divine energies. The infusion of these qualities into human thought, replacing negative traits, removes sin and reveals God's man. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "A patient under the influence of mortal mind is healed only by removing the influence on him of this mind, by emptying his thought of the false stimulus and reaction of will-power and filling it with the divine energies of Truth."Science and Health, pp. 185-186.

Doesn't this passage, for one thing, uncover the mode of mortal mind's false action? That is, doesn't it help us see that any evidence of spiritual stagnation is only "the false stimulus and reaction of will-power," which would claim the ability to hold us in bondage? But insight into mortal mind's hypnotic method of operation is not enough of itself to bring about steady growth in spiritual understanding and healing. Far more joyous, and potent, is the news that human thought can be filled with the spiritual energies that bring about government by God, thus proving that each of us has a claim to divine sonship.

We see from this analysis by Mrs. Eddy that what must be attacked is mortal mind's claim to have power to act, to create an effect, through "will-power," a trait of mortal mind. The root of mortal mind's false claim, then, is the supposition that it has the ability to oppose and reverse the will of divine Mind. Christian Science affirms that there is only one Mind. The key to proving the truth of this statement lies in knowing that nothing but God, Mind, has the power to act—to create and to maintain what He creates.
