When I was a child, my family lived on a cattle ranch in a western state. Since we were eighty miles from the nearest branch church and Christian Science Sunday School, I went to a community Sunday School in a local school building. There I learned Bible stories and memorized Bible verses. My mother, who had been raised in Christian Science, taught me always to expect good and emphasized that God is the source of that good.
At the age of seventeen I had a deep desire to study the Bible Lesson (as outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly), and so began my study of Christian Science. A year later I went away to college and was able to attend a Christian Science Sunday School regularly for the first time. I didn't understand much of this Science at that time, but I knew that what was taught was the divine Truth that meets all human needs.
It wasn't until I was married and we had our children that I took my stand to rely totally on God for healing. This happened at a time when we were sent overseas, as my husband was in the Air Force. We had been told that it was very cold and damp where we were going and that the children would be susceptible to colds. I simply accepted this prediction instead of refuting it through prayer in Christian Science.
