Man: where do we think he is right now?

From the May 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Bible expresses our spiritual conviction: "As for God, his way is perfect." Ps. 18:30.

But are we equally sure about perfect man? Our declarations in Christian Science treatment of perfect man, made in the likeness of God, Spirit, seem to be confronted by something apparently less than perfect and made out of matter. Because of this persistent picture of an imperfect being, we may sometimes be tempted to think of two kinds of man. We may think of both the perfect man who exists as God knows him but is not yet fully realized and of the tangible, living, worth-loving-but-imperfect human we care so much about and whom we want to make well through holding in thought the ideal.

We know this dualism is in fact an inadequate and incorrect impression of Christian Science treatment. So we insist on the true basis of treatment, which is that only the man whom Spirit reveals is man. We know this man is maintained in perfect health and wholeness by God, his perfectly good creator. We agree with the Psalmist's affirmation "It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect." Ps. 18:32.
