Preexistence and body

From the April 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Bodily ills arise from ignorance of man's limitless being and entity in Spirit. The dynamics of man's spiritual identity cannot be grasped through the shortfall of materiality with its finite dimensions. It is only by breaking out of our preoccupation with matter's limitations that we can grasp some understanding of our eternal being in infinite Spirit—wholly outside of matter and the spurious formations of mortal mind.

How beautifully the book of Proverbs speaks of divine wisdom: "The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. . . . Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him." Prov. 8:22, 23, 30 . Here we can discern something too of man's immortal being—man, the very expression of God's nature, dwelling beyond the temporality of matter in the preexistence of the infinite realm of Spirit.

The understanding of man's preexistence brings bodily freedom. The Master, Christ Jesus, proved this. The withered hand was restored to usefulness; the man blind from birth received sight. These healings and many others were based on Jesus' understanding of man's real existence outside of matter in the eternal realm of infinite Spirit.
