Praying for my neighbor

From the May 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This neighbor of mine—the world—is calling for help. One doesn't hear, "Hey, I need help. Give me Christian Science treatment." But one hears, "I live in a decaying neighborhood. I'm afraid for my kids." One hears, "My husband is out of work—again. I'm afraid." Or "I've been sick a long time, and I'm not getting better." Mankind calls in myriad plaintive ways, "I'm afraid."

This neighbor of mine needs to hear what God told Joshua: "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."Josh. 1:9. The world needs to know how Christ Jesus comforted his disciples, saying, "Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom."Luke 12:32.

Perhaps this neighbor of mine has not yet heard the surprising revelation of Christian Science: that man is not a mortal after all but the immortal idea, the image and likeness, of Mind, God; that mankind's many minds are not Mind at all, but made up of mortal notions, suggestions that there is something besides God, the only Mind. Maybe my neighbor has not yet grasped this healing, scientific truth—that no form of evil is powerful or harmful or true, because God is all the power there is, and God is Love. But each one can feel the nourishing of Christian compassion that radiates the love of God.
