The emergence of woman

From the May 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The broadening participation of women in religion, politics, and business is natural and inevitable. It demonstrates to a degree the fact that the higher sense of womanhood—like the higher sense of manhood—has an important role to play in humanity's progress. But real womanhood and manhood are not merely human qualities or classifications. They are spiritual; they emanate from God and are expressed in the real individuality of each of us. It's this spiritual sense of womanhood that needs to emerge in our thoughts and lives.

The qualities of womanhood are not confined to
women, of course, since completeness is manifested
in all spiritual individuality. The unspeakable
love and humility of Jesus, for instance, were as
conspicuous as his spiritual forcefulness and strength.

The inequities that women have suffered throughout history may be due in part to the world's hatred of spirituality. The carnal, material mind would tend to subordinate the more spiritual traits evident in humanity, such as meekness, purity, unselfishness, humility—traits often associated with womanliness.
