MORE "SIGNS OF THE TIMES"

From the May 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"The rise of hope and the decline of despair
explain the decline in death."

The trends in longevity discussed in this excerpt from a book review may not be surprising to Christian Scientists. Mrs. Eddy makes several specific references to early evidences of increased longevity near the turn of the last century. What is worth noting, however, is that the author of the book being reviewed, The Health of Nations, a physician, gives credit for this increase to a decline of hopelessness and despair, and he calls for more education as a promoter of good health.

Ultimately it is the education of thought to understand God, divine Love, that brings humanity the highest sense of self-esteem, love, as well as of health and well-being. And with this understanding comes Christly power, which not only inspires but heals.
