Partners, friends, and church

From the August 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Not long ago I was praying to discern how in my church work I could best support the true concept of Church. What would best promote the forward thrust of inspiration that enables us to help humanity? Actually I didn't have to look far for the answer I needed at that particular moment. It came during my daily study of the Bible Lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly.

A section of the lesson contained the account of Christ Jesus' directing Simon Peter to let down his nets for a draught of fish.See Luke 5:1-11. Peter explained that they had been working all night without success, but because Jesus had asked them to do it, they would. The result? They caught so many fish that they had to call for help from their partners. "And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink." The fishermen were astonished at the size of their catch. But Jesus told them, "Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men."

I suddenly realized that if these men had not worked together as partners, with wonderful, unified effort and helpfulness, all those fish would have been lost. From this I saw clearly just what can be accomplished when we work together in obedience to Christ, Truth, and mutually support each other in church work, be it serving on the executive board of a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, participating at committee or membership meetings, or prayerfully backing The Christian Science Board of Directors. Only through our unified action—based on our understanding of God as the one Mind—can we show our care for mankind by letting the healing light of Christ, Truth, shine through the activities of our churches, lectures, Reading Rooms, and so on.
