Truth lifts us up

From the August 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone." Ps. 91:11, 12 I believe these words from the ninety-first Psalm and quote them often.

One day I fell in the street. "Flat on my face!" I muttered, picking myself up painfully. It seemed ironic to me that I'd been on an errand to help someone and that I'd been singing the hymn that begins "Make channels for the streams of Love," Christian Science Hymnal, No. 182 at the moment my shoe encountered a crack in the pavement and I fell headlong. "Why?" I asked myself. "Why and how could this have happened to me?"

My nose was broken, and my face was cut and bleeding. However, I could walk. I hurried home, where I met a neighbor, whose gentle welcome was a comfort. After a few moments I went into my apartment and began to pray.
