Preaching our sermon

From the August 1988 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To Christian Scientists, the weekly Bible LessonIn the Christian Science Quarterly. they study all week is a sermon to be preached on Sundays.

The Readers who conduct the services strive to allow their impersonal pastor—the Bible, and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy—to speak for itself, letting the beauty, majesty, and healing power of the gospel shine through, with human personality intruding as little as possible. With love for the congregation and themselves, the Readers naturally do their best to display the ability to express Truth that is already possessed by spiritual man—a task far from easy amid the clamor of the material world. Just as naturally they abide by the rules for good reading, which are often simpler than expected, though quite demanding to follow. It may be helpful to explore a few of them.

Often the first need is to conquer fear with its self-centered tensions, which tend to put the voice out of tune. Mrs. Eddy's counsel to pray daily for ourselves largely cares for this task. Such prayer reveals one's true individuality, that of spiritual man, who naturally expresses Godlike dominion. No sixty-second task this! It is the most important of the day, basic to success in any right endeavor.
