Why the trouble—
the boots, the parka, the pack—
Why climb?
And they said,
The discovery. The dominion. The higher view.

Why climb? they asked.
Why the trouble—
the prayer, the study, the struggle—
Why climb?
And I said,
The discovery. The dominion. The higher view.
