Speaking with authority

From the April 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Christ Jesus spoke, something happened. The sick were healed, sinners were reformed, the dead were raised.

How could this be? What was Jesus' authority? How could he speak with such power and unwavering confidence? Wasn't it because he knew who he was? Where he came from? Where he was going? And why he was here on earth? In short, he knew he was the Son of God and had been sent by God to bring the message of the Christ—the true idea of God—to humanity.

The Gospel of Luke says that the people witnessing Jesus' remarkable healing work "were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out." Luke 4:36
