Unity and individuality in church work

From the April 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Psalmist exclaimed, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" ps. 133:1. Yet many of us at one time or another find our views out of sync with those of fellow church members.

The ensuing mental struggle may be severe. Questions may arise: How can I continue actively supporting the institution of church when I feel opposed to certain actions and decisions? How can I abide by the dictates of my own conscience without undermining church unity or, in some cases, democratically arrived at decisions?

There are no easy answers. We may find ourselves praying—and then praying again—to keep our thought free of human will, reaction, or self-justification in order that we may remain loving toward others and receptive of God's guidance.
