Are we dreaming or awake?

From the January 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was in the house, working on a mechanical apparatus and worried that something might go haywire any minute. Then, sure enough, it happened. What a catastrophic mess! I was miserable.

Then I woke up. The morning sun was pouring through the window. I looked around, and everything was calm. There was nothing to clean up. What a relief. The experience had seemed so real and vivid, but it was just a dream.

I couldn't help thinking about how the healings I've had in Christian Science have shown the same dreamlike nature to be true of mortal existence. At first I would believe I was facing a terrifying, complicated something "out there," threatening my happiness and peace. Then I learned I was actually facing a quite subjective, mortal dream-image from which I had to turn my terrified gaze and wake up to what was really going on around me: spiritual reality.
