When a person looks at the world and considers all of its deep and urgent needs, he may feel he doesn't really have the resources or the capacity to make much of a difference. It's often challenging enough to meet what comes to us in the course of our own daily lives. Yet the wider our horizons of service become, the more effective will be the results of our love and prayer, both for ourselves and for the world.
Genuine humility is needed in order to achieve all that is demanded of us individually and as a church movement. Church in particular demands the cultivation of unselfish affection. The temptation is to underestimate our capacity for expressing sufficient wisdom and love to be effective. The Saviour, Christ Jesus, was humble enough to say, "I can of mine own self do nothing"John 5:30. for he knew, with scientific certainty, that the only healing and redeeming power comes directly from God, divine Mind.
Although it is always true that none of us can of our own finite human abilities and designs accomplish God's purpose, we can, as another verse in the New Testament confirms, "do all things through Christ which strengtheneth [us]."Phil. 4:13. The Church of Christ, Scientist, just like each individual student of Christian Science, follows the same divine standard of doing "all things" through Christ, Truth.
