I am deeply grateful to have grown up in a family that faithfully practiced Christian Science. In thinking about it now, I wouldn't want to have grown up in any other way. I'm sure each of us five children has precious memories of healings that occurred throughout those years. I remember Mom and Dad praying for and with us at the outset if we experienced illness or accident or even manifested unlovely traits of character. Nor did they hesitate to call a Christian Science practitioner for additional prayerful assistance when needed. Healing and much spiritual growth were always the outcome.
When I was a young child I lost my balance and toppled headfirst off a high stool onto the hardwood floor. I remember hearing my dad's assurance, "God is here!" as he gathered me up in his arms to comfort me and pray for me. As a result, I sustained no ill effects from the fall.
Diseases commonly associated with childhood, which we contracted while we were growing up, were healed effectively through prayer alone, and we were soon back in school. For the greater part we were happy and healthy children; joy, health, and harmony in the home were considered to be normal—an attainable standard of living.
