A warm letter arrived at our home one day. In it, the writer stated: "I admire so much the tender and affectionate relationship that you two have with each other." These few sincere words heralded a wonderful healing in our family.
The letter writer was a young, attractive work associate of my husband's. There was a strong attraction between the two of them that had not seemed particularly threatening to me until we all went on a vacation together. During these few days I could see that he was quite torn between the two of us. At times he treated us as though we were both his wife, giving us equal time and equal affection. Then, at other times, when the three of us were together, it was almost as though I weren't there. I felt anguished at this realization.
How had I failed him as a wife? Was I too old? Was my cooking falling off? Was our relationship stale? Was I truly cherishing him? You can imagine the anxiety that flooded my thoughts.
