I had an experience some time ago that gave me a much better understanding of my true selfhood as the image and likeness of God, Spirit, than I'd had before.
For several years I'd had a small and apparently harmless cyst on a part of my body. I had occasionally treated it through prayer in Christian Science, but this had never been done very consistently, because the difficulty seemed small, painless, and not generally apparent to others. One night, however, as I was preparing for bed, I discovered that its size had increased alarmingly, and that it had become inflamed and painful.
I had heard stories about the possible meaning of these developments, and I had a moment of extreme fear. The fear didn't last, though, for I turned on it with statements of spiritually scientific truth readily recalled from the Bible, the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, and the Christian Science Hymnal.
