Some years ago my husband and I felt the time was right to have a family. We looked forward with expectancy to this. The months rolled on however, and nothing happened. At times I would feel very discouraged and would cry to my husband, "Will we ever have a baby?" I'll always be grateful for his steadfastness.
I had the prayers of a Christian Science practitioner, and at one point he perceived my need to gain a deeper, clearer sense of true womanhood. So I explored the Bible to discern the qualities of women like Ruth, Hannah, the Shunammite woman, and Sarah. I saw that instead of yielding to disappointment, heartbreak, envy, doubt, and impatience, these individuals expressed sincere devotion to the one God and complete assurance in His law of goodness and abundance. They were unselfish, obedient, faithful, and—above all—receptive. So, with a fresh spiritual outlook, I made efforts to express these same qualities consistently. And I endeavoured to know myself and others as the perfect, spiritual image that God creates and maintains. I also learned not to be sensitive to questions and remarks from other people as to why we did not have children.
I gained a lot of help from the Christian Science periodicals and often found freedom in singing hymns, which would break the mesmerism or dullness of human thought.
