Inclusive love: the best weapon against racism

A JOURNAL OF PEOPLE PLACES AND PRAYER

From the November 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Much healing thought goes into the preparation of an article for the Christian Science periodicals. The following letter, sent to us with the proof of an article the author had written for the Christian Science periodicals, was particularly moving and enlightening.

Our city has taken on an especially negative reputation of late in regard to neo-Nazism and animosity toward foreigners. The media, too, continually bring up the name of our city. One night an Angolan was beaten to death on the street. Another time, a home for asylum seekers was set on fire and burned to the ground.

Many people condemn these excesses and have taken to the streets in protest against them. When a major demonstration against violence toward foreigners was announced, I considered whether I should take part. Our son did participate in the demonstration. But I asked myself what Jesus would have done. The answer came to me to put prayer first. As Christian Scientists we have unlimited confidence in the effect of prayer.
