Years ago I began to have pain in my knees. Many times it was unbearable. This became a chronic problem that continued for a period of twenty years. I would pray with "the scientific statement of being" found in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health. I held to the truth of the first part of the statement, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter" (p. 468), and prayed with it to the very best of my understanding. I would get relief from the pain at times, but then it would start again. My discouragement was often very great.
Through the entire experience, it was a great comfort to me to go to the Bible, and I found many helpful truths there. We are told in Isaiah, "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else" (45:22). This was an encouraging thought, and I held on to it continually.
There is healing in every one of the hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal, and I found assurance in them, especially No. 134, which begins, "I look to Thee in every need, / And never look in vain...." How wonderful to know God is always with us and is a very present help!
