"Kindred tastes, motives, and aspirations are necessary to the formation of a happy and permanent companionship" (Science and Health, p. 60). Although there had been many years when my husband and I were happily married, there came a time when divorce was necessary. At this point resentment, lack of funds, and loneliness threatened to overwhelm me.
I took up prayer for myself and asked a teacher of Christian Science to pray with me. Gradually, the way became clear. Each specific problem I faced was turned into a blessing. The temptation to be resentful over my husband's broken marriage vows, and the appearance of wasted years, were healed through understanding God's constant love and care for me and for our daughter, of whom I had custody.
My prayer focused on proving that God is the one source of happiness and friendship. This brought tangible and permanent solutions, as God's love and tenderness for all became evident in our lives. My daughter and I were able to live for a short period of time with friends from our church. This arrangement was very supportive to us, as the reasonable rent allowed me to remain in my chosen field and my first love — the practice of Christian Science. Words can never express the gratitude we felt to this family for their unselfishness, which we know in turn blessed them.
