God's ways are wonderful! I view Christian Science as the most priceless treasure in my life, and I have seen proof of its power. During the more than thirty-nine years of its prohibition in my country, Christian Science continued to help me to lead a happy family life and to be successful in my work as a teacher at a university-preparatory high school.
When my husband passed on suddenly following an accident, I searched day and night in Science and Health for truths concerning the continuity of life and the unreality of death. With God's help I learned to deal with self-pity and to replace it with trust in God's ever-present love. Since God fills all space and man is His image and likeness, there is no such thing as a life that has lost its meaning. Grief and inactivity cannot constitute a person's life; only spiritual qualities such as joy, activity, and gratitude can.
During this time of struggle, a Christian Scientist invited me to come to Boston. (I had become acquainted with her in the early 1950s at a meeting of young Christian Scientists that I had attended by crossing the border at night between what was then East Germany and West Germany.) She also sent me a poem that had been published in the Journal, which brought out the fact that death cannot separate us from the true identity of our loved ones. The truths contained in this poem brought me calm and peace.
