The Christian Science Reading Room and new/old evangelism

From the December 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Last month two people explained what they are doing to present Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy to their hometown bookstores. Christian Science Reading Rooms will always be the primary outlets for distributing Science and Health and other literature published or sold by The Christian Science Publishing Society. So it's natural to ask, How can Reading Rooms better carry out their evangelical mission? This past August, Miles Harbur, Assistant Manager and Chief Operating Officer of the Publishing Society, was invited to speak at a meeting of church members held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In this issue we offer part one of his talk, about Reading Rooms and their missionary work. In part two, to be published in a coming issue, he discusses the mission of The Christian Science Monitor.

"New occasions teach new duties..."

Your theme of "sharing" is one we are thinking about a lot at the Publishing Society, because "to publish"—to make publicly known, to spread or diffuse widely and broadly—is to share. And your goal of "working with the leaven of Truth" is a wonderful complement to sharing, because it is this leaven that moves sharing beyond a nice exchange of ideas to actually demonstrating the power of God's redeeming Word to reach and bless humanity.
