Argument in Christian Science treatment

From the August 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One of the most basic elements of Christianity is yielding to the healing power of God through prayer. Prayer lifts thought to the height where one senses clearly the presence of God, of Truth and Love; where one is conscious of God's all-encompassing goodness. Yielding thought to the divine brings healing.

There are times when we are so awake to God's love—so in harmony with Him—that healing is instantaneous. Other times, we may need help to feel with absolute conviction the reality of God's allness and of man as His image. This is when we can pray, utilizing the tool of mental argument.

Prayerful argument denies the suggestions of material sense (what the five physical senses tell us) and affirms the truths of spiritual sense (what God tells us). Material sense contends that man is a fragile mortal subject to disease. Spiritual sense transcends what the material senses report, enabling us to discern God's image, which is spiritual and perfect, strong and free, exempt from disease.
