Viewing world events through the lens of Spirit

From the August 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I know a man who says he no longer watches the news on television. If he watches the nightly news, he cannot sleep. If he watches the morning news, he cannot work! He shares the despair of many viewers who feel they are seeing and hearing too much about what's gone wrong in the world, and too little about what's right.

Of course, not everyone is so emotionally affected by the news. Although, with round-the-clock television and radio coverage, it's hard to escape those vivid close-ups of civil war, accident, child abuse, extortion, and natural disaster.

Certainly we can't ignore the evils confronting mankind. But we need to understand that those images reflect the disorder of mortal existence, not the spiritual order of God's kingdom. And no material picture, no matter how vivid or persuasive it appears to be, can represent the reality of God's creation, which truly undergirds our lives.
