It has been over fifteen years since I last wrote a testimony for the periodicals. Over these years there have been numerous healings and demonstrations of God's power and presence in my life. Of these there are two very special experiences I'd like to share which brought to me a deeper understanding of my relation to God.
On one occasion, I woke in the early hours of the morning with a very sore throat. It seemed that I could not swallow without a great deal of pain, and I was overcome with fear. Earlier in my life I had suffered very badly from this sort of illness and once I had been confined to bed for weeks, unable to eat any solid foods. Because of this previous experience I was extremely anxious, particularly as my voice needed to be clear during the coming days of recording a radio lecture.
It was obvious I needed to pray. I turned to "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health (see p. 468). I repeated the opening words, "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter," to myself a few times. This cut through the feelings of fear. Then the question came to me: "Why is there 'no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter'?"
