Spiritual ways and means in church work

From the October 1996 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is likely that at some time during membership in a Christian Science branch church, most members will be appointed or elected to serve on a board or a committee—perhaps several committees! Such work in support of the Christian Science movement may sometimes be thought of as simply a duty, but can certainly be welcomed as both a joy and a privilege.

Although it may appear that we are on a committee because of a particular skill or depth of experience, it is our capacity to act as a metaphysician that counts the most. It is the truth we know and practice that is of paramount importance.

Human means, unless impelled by prayer, achieve little true or lasting success. Basing our work on a Christly foundation, on the other hand, reveals infinite opportunities for good. Then the steps we're led to take have the spiritual and metaphysical undergirding upon which the work can go on from strength to strength. In relation to matters in support of our church, metaphysical work is indispensable.
