I am so deeply grateful to have been taught God's healing power from a very young age, and to have had the opportunity to attend a Christian Science Sunday School.
When I was eight years old, I had an experience that made the healing power of God especially clear to me. My sisters and I were very rambunctious. We loved to somersault on our beds then plunge off by somersaulting onto the hardwood floor. One particular morning when I was supposed to be getting ready for school, I somersaulted off the bed one last time before leaving. I was rushing so my mom wouldn't catch me, and I tumbled off the bed in an off-balance position—forcefully landing on my neck on the floor. I heard a cracking sound and screamed out in pain. We found out later that my neck was broken. I could not move.
My grandmother, who was a Christian Science practitioner, was called immediately. She and Mother prayed to see my perfect state of being and the unreality of accident. I know that they prayed to understand the words written in our textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, "Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection" (p. 424). I remember hearing them read out loud the spiritual definition of children from Science and Health. A portion of it is, "The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love" (p. 582). Of immeasurable comfort to me was the expression on my mother's face; it never showed any sign of fear. She looked at me with such peace and assurance that I felt confident of healing.
