Through steadfast reliance on...

From the January 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Through steadfast reliance on the Science of Christianity, I have seen again and again that God "is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think" (Eph. 3:20).

The first major challenge for me after college was finding an absorbing, long-term career utilizing my talents and interests. For some time I found work only in numerous short-term jobs, all quite unconnected. It was very discouraging. But I continued to pray earnestly to know I was established in my right place, fulfilling God's purpose and plan. In making employment choices, I returned repeatedly to Mrs. Eddy's assurance in Unity of Good that God "guides every event of our careers" (pp. 3-4). A practitioner's insightful prayers helped me give up a willful outlining of the conditions and terms of my employment. I discerned that God outlined for His beloved child infinite good, available at all times. Fear of lack melted when I saw I was governed by God's laws of immediacy, adequacy, and perfect supply.

As I changed from focusing on "What can the job bring me?" to asking "Father, how can I serve You?" I saw that God's man lives at the standpoint of infinite opportunity. Quite soon, I was offered a fine professional career with a major youth organization. The career utilized my previous experience and offered satisfying opportunities for service. Later, during a happy career in family raising, I also used my skills as a volunteer youth leadership advisor for twenty years. God has certainly guided all events in my career.
