Testimonies of Healing

In 1986 a few friends and I...

From the May 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In 1986 a few friends and I started a Christian Science group. The services were conducted at my home. When a jealous friend learned about this, he reported to the police that I had formed a clandestine group. This person didn't know anything about Christian Science. A few weeks later, two police officers stopped me on the way to the post office and told me to go to the police station the following morning to answer questions about Christian Science, as they also didn't know anything about it.

In the morning, before I left for the police station, I was afraid, for it was the first time I had been asked to go to the police to answer questions. I opened my copy of Science and Health to find a solution to this fear and read, "Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious—as Life eternally is—can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not" (p. 495). The moment I began thinking about the meaning of this sentence, my fear evaporated.

After that, I said the "Daily Prayer," from the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy: "'Thy kingdom come;' let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!" (Art. VIII, Sect. 4). After this I called three members of our group. They accompanied me to the police station.
