MORALITY

The prosperity of purity

The moral demand had to be met. This was essential to my own growth and to the success of the church services.

From the April 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Purity is an essential element in the practice of Christianity. To be pure-minded, to live a life of goodness and spiritual clarity, is inseparable from spiritual growth and attainment. The Bible tells of individuals who strove for purity and goodness, and records the great achievements that resulted from such faithfulness. These lives were successful. They were truly prosperous.

One such individual was Joseph. Each time I read or hear the account of him in the book of Genesis, these words stand out to me (emphasis added): "And the Lord was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man." Gen. 39:2. In the Bible account we follow Joseph through trials and temptations, and we see him progress and prosper as he stays faithful to God and to his own God-given, spiritual purity. His advancement from slavery to becoming a valued aide to Pharaoh, second in command in the kingdom, was directly related to his steadfastness to good. The prosperity of his life could not be separated from the purity of his life. They were linked; they went hand in hand. He became successful and valued as he proved his God-given worth by his faithfulness to his spiritual nature. We might say that his spiritual clarity, his purity, was his prosperity.

It is important for us to understand this link between purity and prosperity. We, too, will lead successful lives as we live divinely vibrant, holy lives.
