Caring about young people's spirituality

From the November 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was thinking about young people—about peer pressure and media influence urging them to get involved in drinking, drugs, and promiscuity.

A new visitor came in, wanting to learn about Christian Science.

As I prayed, I realized that my thoughts about teenagers mattered. If I accepted stereotypes, I would add to the mental environment that quietly encourages teens to live up to those stereotypes. If, instead, I thought about teenagers in terms of their relationship to God—seeing them as fully expressing His/Her nature—I would expect them to desire spirituality above all else. This prayer and expectancy would support their tendency to pursue higher goals.
