HEALING

Believe what you say

God's message of His all-power is not just comforting words. It is eye-opening truth.

From the April 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How often do we say something like, "I know that God is right here with me, and that I can count on Him to take care of me. He is the only power there is, and He has only good for me." Then two minutes later we start complaining about the boss who doesn't treat us right, or about how little money we have, or about how bad we feel. We say we believe in God's great love; then we make statements that can't possibly be reconciled with a genuine acceptance of His love.

We don't mean to be that way. We just don't seem able to help it, sometimes. All too often we are like the man who, with tears in his eyes, said to Jesus, "Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief." Mark 9:24. The man was desperate. His son suffered from an illness that made him violent and self-destructive. The disciples had failed to heal the boy, but when Jesus took up the case, healing came quickly.

What was the difference between Jesus and everyone else who was there? The Master knew that true health comes from God, and that His children, who are made in the likeness of God, are immune from all illness. Jesus' understanding of these truths was clear and without hesitation. This gave him power to change people's lives. For him, healing was natural and to be expected. He taught his disciples—and us, too: "Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." Mark 11:23, 24.
