LETTERS

From the April 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

While reading a recent issue of the Journal, I was reminded of my introduction to Christian Science, more than fifty years ago. I had attended a Baptist Sunday School, where one of my teachers told me that one day I would come to know the words of the Bible, and would understand not only the Christ, but God, too.

This certainly didn't happen as I continued through high school and then joined the Royal Navy before I was seventeen.

But I was soon to realize how powerful the Word of God is. One day, during a Malta convoy off the island of Crete, we were struck by a one thousand-pound bomb and our destroyer began to sink, dragging many of us down with it. I called on God for help and found myself blown back to the surface, where I was able to swim to temporary safety.
