Ever since I've been paying increased attention to how much interest there is in society for answers about life—answers beyond the conventional view—I've discovered that people everywhere are more and more receptive to a spiritual view of things. People are increasingly asking for alternative answers to questions that conventional medicine, the natural sciences, or theology haven't answered for them.
For a long time, I was looking for a spiritual perspective, too, and found that a book a friend told me about—Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures—gave me the kind of satisfying answers I wanted. Its author, Mary Baker Eddy, searched for spiritual answers herself over many years. In fact, she dedicated the book to "honest seekers for Truth." Science and Health, p. xii. She was acutely aware that men and women are reaching out for a deeper, more practical understanding of God.
Everywhere I go I see evidence of this reaching out. For example, one day I went to a store to have copies made of a poster about Mary Baker Eddy. The owner, who had just opened her business, told me how difficult it can sometimes be to make it in the business world, especially as a woman. When she saw the poster and the words on it, "This Woman Never Gave Up," she burst out, "That's me!" and asked if she could keep a poster for herself. I gave her one, and she taped it to the store's front door. After a few weeks she told me that many customers had talked to her about it and had asked about Science and Health. She sent them to the bookstore where they could get a copy.
