PROVING GOD'S CONTROL

Annulling the effects of accidents

Divine Mind holds each idea, each one of us, safe in its love.

From the June 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One Day I Was working in the kitchen, with our baby strapped into an infant seat on the kitchen table. I heard a crash. When I looked up, my heart stopped—somehow she had flipped her seat onto the floor, striking her forehead and nose with full force. I called to my husband to phone a Christian Science practitioner, as I removed her from the seat and took her in my arms. I immediately started praying earnestly, using the strong statements of truth in "the scientific statement of being" in Science and Health: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all...." Science and Health, p. 468. Then I sang hymns from the Christian Science Hymnal.

We had asked the practitioner to come to the house, and she arrived shortly. Her calm, confident thought was so strengthening. She was compassionate and very understanding of the need; yet she clearly realized and affirmed our baby's present perfection as a beloved child of God, held constantly in His embrace. The ninety-first Psalm in the Bible so beautifully describes this divine embrace: "He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust.... For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone." Ps. 91:4, 11, 12. And Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony.

"Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection." Science and Health, p. 424.
