It Is A Cold Winter's Day in 1866, and there are people gathering in a New England home. A friend has been seriously injured through an accident, and the physician considers her condition to be critical.
Nothing in this woman's life holds much promise. Even before the accident, she has struggled with ill health. Her first husband has died, and her second marriage hasn't been a happy one. Here only child has been taken away from her because her family considered her physically and financially unable to care for him.
At this point, severely injured, she asks for her Bible and reads accounts of Jesus' healing work. I see her at this moment as facing a decision—there and then—even under such dire circumstances. And while others wait for her death, she lives. She gets up, dresses herself, and joins her surprised friends.
