Expanding views of God

From the June 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I teach a group of second-grade Sunday School students. Recently, one of them has been bringing a friend to class who hasn't been to any sort of Sunday School before. One of the times he visited, I began the class by asking the students what they thought of when I said the word God. The visitor answered first. He said that God is a man with a beard who lives in the sky. One of the regular students then said that God is loving and Truth. And another said that God is Mind. When the visitor heard that, his eyes lighted up and he said, "God is a Mind. Cool!" He had a similar reaction when he found out that God is Mother as well as Father. It's been a joy to watch God reveal Himself/Herself to our class, and especially to witness this new student's understanding of God expand.
