CONVERSATIONS

When faith and reason meet

From the June 2000 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Seven years ago, , a professor of physics at Tulane University, New Orleans, served with on a search committee for a new dean for Newcomb College, which is part of the university. He was one of the faculty members on the committee, and she was one of the alumnae.

During informal moments, Mrs. Schupp, a Christian Scientist, asked Professor McGuire questions about his life and his work, and then questioned his answers! The ensuing exchange continued after the committee work was over, and is still going on. During a year when Professor McGuire was doing research at institutions in Germany, they remained in contact through e-mail.

Many of the professor's questions have touched on Christian Science, and both writers have given us permission to publish extracts from their dialogue, with minimal editing.
