I was introduced to Christian Science a little over two years ago by a friend who gave me a copy of Science and Health. I had developed an allergy while doing research in Milan, Italy. The most disturbing symptom was frequent pain and burning in my eyes, which I had been experiencing since I arrived in that city. I was especially concerned about the problem because my work required that I spend the day reading and transcribing 16th-century archival documents. I had visited a number of physicians, all of whom diagnosed the problem as an incurable allergy to the smog. They prescribed various medicines that temporarily alleviated some of the pain. I was told that the difficulty was likely to persist for a month or two even after I returned home.
I realized that the drug was not necessary.
I felt prayer could heal me, and I began studying small segments of the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly. I also attended the Christian Science church services in Milan. I was reluctant, though, to give up a particular medicine that had given me temporary, yet substantial, relief. The day I returned home, however, I began reading Science and Health. Through my reading, I realized that the drug was not necessary. I threw it out, put in my contact lenses, and experienced no further difficulties.
