Remember the eunuch of Biblical fame? There he sat in his chariot reading the Scriptures, trying in vain to make something of them. But their meaning was lost on him. How inadequate he must have felt—and angry. If I'd been in his place, I would have wondered, "How canGod leave me ignorant? I need to know God!" I picture him in tears of frustration, especially since, as a eunuch, he wasn't allowed to worship in the house of God. Acts 8:26–38 .
But his pure desire was known to God, who sent Philip, one of Jesus' disciples, directly to the eunuch. Philip rode along with him in the chariot for a while and taught him—so clearly and convincingly that the eunuch was baptized as a Christian before Philip departed. What a shift—from ignorance to believing with all his heart.
I experienced nearly as radical a shift after receiving Primary class instruction in Christian Science. I didn't start out totally ignorant, but then neither did the eunuch, really. He knew to look in the Scriptures for answers. But he needed a teacher. So did I. We all do.
